Is this the fastest seven-year-old in the world?
A seven-year-old sprinter from Nigeria has captured the imagination of the athletics world after a video of him completing a 100-metre dash in under 13 seconds went viral online. The clip, filmed at a regional youth sports event in Lagos, shows the young boy — identified only as Tobechukwu by his proud parents — exploding from the starting line with an intensity and form that coaches say they rarely see in children twice his age.
Youth athletics experts have been quick to note that comparing children’s times to adult world records is not scientifically meaningful, as developing bodies have vastly different physiological capacities. However, for a child of his age and size, the performance is genuinely extraordinary. Several former international sprinters who viewed the footage described his mechanics as ‘astonishing’ and his raw acceleration as something that can’t be taught.
His family says Tobechukwu has been running competitively since he was five, often against older children, and has never lost a race at his school. His father, a former semi-professional footballer, has been encouraging his son’s athletic development while being careful to avoid placing pressure on him. ‘We just let him run because he loves it,’ he told reporters.
Whether Tobechukwu will grow into a future Olympic champion remains to be seen — the path from prodigy to elite athlete is long and uncertain, shaped by factors from injury to mental resilience. But for now, the world is watching a seven-year-old run, and finding in that simple act something genuinely joyful and full of promise.
